Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
~1 Timothy 4:12
Worship. Witness. Service. Fellowship. Teen SOYO (click here for the website) is a ministry for youth ages 13 to 19. We are active in all parts of the church and often work with other organizations to accomplish service goals.
SOYO raises money for charities, special events, and our own activities. Pancake breakfasts, spaghetti dinners, and special collections are all part of the fun. Retreats and Parish Life Conferences are important aspects of our spiritual growth as well.
Every year, on Great and Holy Friday night, we hold a vigil in the church, reading from the Psalter so that Christ’s tomb may not be left unattended. That night, we also clean the Altar and fill plastic eggs with candy for the children’s Easter egg hunt that Sunday morning after Agape Vespers.
October is Youth Month when we serve as ushers, readers, and raise money for the causes we support, such as the Special Olympics.
During the annual Middle Eastern festival, we dance traditional Middle Eastern dances and end each set by dancing through the crowd in a traditional line dance, inviting everyone to join us. We begin practicing months in advance to perform our best!
We have many fellowship activities, including movie nights, pool parties, ping pong and other games in the recreation room, holiday parties, and “Ask Abouna” sessions where we ask Father Gabriel about anything on our minds, discussing from an Orthodox Christian perspective.
Teen SOYO’s Youth Director is Amy Kenny.
